If you’ve quietly given up on waiting for Legally Blonde 3(honestly same), a beacon of hope has finally arrived—Reese Witherspoon recently revealed that she is still investing in expanding the world of Elle Woods, and confirmed that she’s working on getting a third movie to come out at some point in the future.
In a March 26 interview with Bustle, Reese was asked if a third installment in the Legally Blonde movie franchise is still a possibility. Her answer? “Absolutely.”
She added, “It’s a whole world that we want to build with this character. Not dissimilar to what happened with Barbie two summers ago, there's a feeling that women want to rally around these characters that were part of their childhood and celebrate the idea that Elle Woods is more than the color pink. She's part of your identity of self-worth and accomplishment.”
Reese also explained in the Bustle interview that she never thought that Elle Woods would have such a lasting impact on women—but is glad she has.
“We worked really hard on the messaging. I was determined to make sure it was a story about a woman that wasn't about her romantic relationships,” she said. “It was about how she worked hard to accomplish something very difficult on her own terms, and no relationship would define her early 20s like that.”
The Legally Blonde franchise has expanded so far with Elle, a prequel series. As for what fans can expect, prepare for Elle and her dainty pink tones to face a stark contrast.
“It’s her junior year of high school, and her father gets transferred to Seattle,” Reese teased. “Sunshine and vibrant colors are traded for rain and grunge, and it’s such a mismatch. It's really fun to see Elle Woods as this fish out of water in 1990s grunge-era Seattle.”
ICYMI, Elle is set to arrive on July 1 this year on Prime Video.
